DIY Rakhi - tutorial

Hello friends,

With one of the main festivals approaching next month i.e. Rakshabandhan, I was keen to share the method to make beautiful handmade rakhis.

It is super easy and an altogether different feeling to tie a hand made rakhi on your brother's wrist...which he is going to flaunt for quiet sometime...:-)

We, at our home have been making rakhis for...well...as long as I remember...

Material Required:
- Satin thread (kacha resham)
- Glue
- Ribbons
- Laces
- Embellishments (lots of)

Here is the picture depicting procedure to create base of resham:

Steps:
1. Wind the thread over a small bangle or between your fore fingers to create base of desired size.
2. Tie it tightly from the middle (as shown in picture 1). After tying, cute the side loops and remove the bangle.
3. Turn it around from the cut-sides to give it a round shape and cover the knot in the middle (I guess, picture 3 shows it better than words)
4. Use an old toothbrush to smooth the resham threads, the task will be mush faster and efficient if you are using kachha resham (highly recommended)
5. After brushing, trim it from the sides to give a perfect round shape.
6. Last step is to pressed in a huge book to take the proper shape. We used to keep them overnight.

Later on, use variety of embellishments and decorate the resham bases with different designs, let your creativity do the magic...!!

Stick on the ribbon/thread on the back. Remember to stick a small piece of paper on the back side over the ribbon/thread to secure it firmly to the base.

Here are the pictures of final creations-

Some blow art...

And finally, thread painting.
I personally used to like this a lot as a child and had made lots of cards using this technique. It is fun to do and gives beautiful results...take a look

Handmade Jewellery

Hello Friends,

This is some very old work that has been done during my college days (basically by my mom).
Courses of jewellery making were in full bloom at our place during those days and my mother's classes were full of girls asking for learning new designs everyday.

So here, I am sharing some typical neck pieces. Picture quality is not very good as I have used my mobile phone camera.

During my recent visit to home, I have brought all that jewellery making stuff from my mother's trash. Now I am just hoping to find some peaceful time to create something worth.

Photoframe with flowers, hearts and lots of LOVE..!!

Hello Friends,

For the very first time I have created a photo frame...yes a complete photo frame right from scratch.
This is a completely recycled project. I have used old desktop calender base, red and golden handmade paper (from some old wedding card) and lots of creativity.

So here is the final outcome. I was quiet satisfied with the result....!!
Initially I tried quilled flowers, spiral roses..but nothing looked better than these fringed flowers along with golden spirals...!!
Intricate golden design is all hand cut.

A closer looks..

With flowers and hearts, the theme of this photo frame is "Love", and keeping this in mind I have placed this picture of my wedding...which was indeed a very beautiful new beginning of my new role(s)..!!

Birthday card

This is simple card, I created for my mom's birthday.
All flowers and leaves are handcut.
A white CS has been used as base.
A ribbon border is used and most amazing part is the effect on border.
Can you make out how I created that..??

Well it was a long forgotten childhood activity,
I simply put the CS on a comb and rubbed my son's crayon to get the effect of that impression. Interesting na..!!

Happy Birthday - Paper collage sunflower

Well for us, January is indeed a month of birthdays..!!

So here comes my next kid friendly craft, a  paper collage sunflower.
We started as a team (me and my kid).
He got bored after sometime time and was more interested in tearing the pieces of paper.
Now I am more worried about his future text books :-(

Anyways, I was satisfied with the final outcome and here is the picture for you.
We are going to send this card to my sis, who is favorite masi of little champ..!!

This is a recycling project, as i have used old magazine pages for collage..

I am also trying my luck to win some nice gifts...!! The chance to win is there on Sindhu's blog, she has a lovely mini giveaway to celebrate 6 months of blogging. Congrats Sindhu !!

Birthday Card - Potato stamps !!

Well these cards are very very special for me.
Reason: This is the first project me and my little champ have done together :-)

So here it goes, this a simple kids craft, very easy to do and lots of fun.
I have used a small potato, made a flower and a leaf stamp using a pointed knife, oviously kiddo was not allowed in this step.

Later on we had lots of fun. we put diffferent colors on our new stamps and made two sweet cards.
One card is for his grand mom (my mother) as her birthday is fast approaching.

And second one is for his teacher...for wishing her a happy new year.

I added some stems, he helped in putting glitter and pearls for the centre of flowers.

We thoroughly enjoyed the process, only difficulty was he wanted to do more and more and was not ready to stop stamping..!!! I guess, its in the genes...:-)
On a personal note, these small arts and craft activities are great ways to bond with your kid and develop the creativity in young minds. Personally I feel it is far far better than mobiles, video games and other gadgets...!!

PS: Don't ask me why leaves are coming in from all directions...!!!!

Do drop your comments, I would love to hear....

Velvet roses

Here is the wall hanging with a warm welcome note.

It is decorated with red roses made up of shiny velvet cloth.

The picture taken is before the final framing.

Mirror frame wid ceramic roses

This mirror frame is decorated by ceramic work (roses made of white plaster and fevicol mixture),
once the flowers are properly dried and painted, copper dust is sprayed to get the final effect.

We have tried this technique on flower pots as well. All the supplies are easily available in any hardware shop.

Sanskar Rangoli

This is rangoli created during this year's Diwali.

Traditional Ghadoli - Punjabi wedding.

Ghadoli is the term used for a small water pot, which is filled and carried by bride/groom's sister in law. This water is used to take bath after the haldi ceremony in a traditional north Indian wedding.

This is a typical ritual in all Punjabi weddings and was done with full dhol dhamaal in my sister's wedding as well. Here is the picture of the ghadoli that we decorated for our dear would be bride...

A plain steel matki was transformed into a beautiful ghadoli...thanks to the creative souls at my home :-)

Rangoli

These are some latest rangolis made by me during last diwali festivals.
This pattern is known as Sanskar rangoli, and is created by white color on a colorful base.

And this one is made by my younger sis. This is based on the view of majestic "Bhedaghat" in our hometown where Narmada river flows in the middle of marble rocks. It is one of the top most tourist attractions of MP.
My sister specializes in  landscape paintings and Bhedaghat paintings. Will upload her more collection soon.

Handmade rakhis

These are some of my handmade rakhis.
This is one of the craft that we started doing as kids....This year it was bit different...as I made them all alone..:-(
It was bit nostalgic...and fun at the same time...creating rakhis after so many years...!!
